During his early life, Jontay played basketball with his brothers and father. He attended Tolton Catholic High School in Columbia where he led his team to two state championships. After high school, Jontay committed to play college basketball at the University of Missouri. During his freshman year in the 2017-18 season, he averaged 9.9 points per game along with 6.8 rebounds per game while shooting over 36% from beyond the arc earning him the SEC Co-Sixth Man of The Year award that season.
Jontay Porter College Stint and NBA Journey
Jontay played just one season of College Ball at the University of Missouri for the Missouri Tigers and even teamed with brother Michael Porter Jr. for a few games before Michael picked up a Long-term injury that kept him out for some time. While Michael got picked 14th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, Jontay struggled being picked in the 2019 NBA Draft and went undrafted.
Jontay went undrafted, leading him to sign a short-term deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. Jontay managed only 11 appearances for the Grizzlies before being sent to the G League where he played for the Memphis Hustle.
Jontay played nine games for the herd and tried to put up his best stats. Playing just nine games off the bench for the Hustle, Jontay averaged 7.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.2 Blocks on an average of 16 minutes played. After his short tenure at Memphis, he was waved off in June of 2021.
In 2022, Jontay joined the Wisconsin Herd, an affiliate team of the Milwaukee Bucks just days before the beginning of the 2022-23 G League season. Jontay has started in 13 games for the team out of 17 games played, averaging 11.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game.
In the G League Showcase Cup, Jontay has shown even better potential for his talents and abilities by averaging 13.5 points, 8.5 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks on 44% shooting from the field. For 2023/24 NBA season, Jontay Porter signed a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors.
