Nicolas Batum is a French Basketball player currently playing for the Los Angeles Clippers. Batum was born to Richard Batum, a French national basketball player. Unfortunately, in 1991, he passed away due to an aneurysm during a game in which both Batum’s mother and Batum were in the stands. Since then, he has developed a love for basketball to carry his father’s legacy.
Batum was part of the junior French national team that won the 2004 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. In the 2006 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, France won the gold medal and Batum won the MVP of the tournament. After this, Batum transferred to Le Mans Sarthe, a team in the French basketball league, where he played for 2 years. While playing for Le Mans, Batum did not have a standout first season as he only averaged 3.4 points and 2.5 rebounds. In his second season, however, Batum upped his scoring and averaged 12.3 points per game and 5 rebounds per game. After this season, Batum declared for the NBA draft.
Batum was picked by the Portland Trail Blazers as the 25th overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. Batum came off the bench for the first 3 games of his career but then got moved up to the starting lineup in place of Travis Outlaw and remained a regular starter ever since. Batum had 3 solid seasons before playing for SLUC Nancy during the 2011 lockout. He then returned to Portland for the 2012 NBA season. On December 16, 2012, Batum recorded the 15th ever ‘five-by-five’ where he had almost five in every major statistical category. Batum finished the night by recording 11 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 5 blocks. In the 2015 offseason, the Portland Trail Blazers traded Batum to the Charlotte Hornets where he ended up playing five seasons. However, at the tail end of his career with the Hornets, injuries started adding up for Batum and the Hornets decided to waive him at the start of the 2020-21 season. Batum then signed with the Los Angles Clippers where he’s been playing for the last 3 seasons. Batum is expected to retire from NBA basketball at the end of the 2023-24 NBA season.
