Despite going undrafted in 2013, Covington was signed by the Houston Rockets on a three year contract, but he was soon sent to the NBA G League, then known as the NBA Development League (NBA D-League), to refine his skills with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Rockets' affiliate team.

Undeterred by this, Covington seized the opportunity to showcase his talent on the D League stage. For the Vipers in the 2013/14 NBA D League, Covington emerged as a key contributor, averaging 23.2 points per game, along with 9.2 rebounds and 2.4 steals which showcased his ability to score and defend at a high level. He was named to the 2014 NBA D-League All-Star Game where his performance left a lasting impression, as he shattered records with 33 points, 22 of which came in the game's final six minutes. Covington's terrific display earned him the NBA D-League All-Star Game MVP honor and solidified his status as a rising star in the league.

On November 15, 2014, Covington's perseverance paid off when he signed a reported five-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. Since then, he has established himself as one of the premier 3-and-D role players in the NBA, known for his defensive prowess and sharpshooting abilities.

Today, Covington's success story serves as a testament to the power of determination and resilience. Despite going undrafted and spending time in the G League, Covington's relentless efforts propelled him to NBA stardom. His journey stands as an inspiration to aspiring basketball players everywhere, proving that with dedication and hard work, success can indeed be achieved, regardless of the path taken.
