In his senior season, he averaged 11.2 points and 7.7 assists per game and was named John R. Wooden California High School Player of the Year in 2011.

Dinwiddie then played college basketball at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he helped his team earn its first NCAA men's basketball tournament berth since the 2002/03 season and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.

In three seasons in college, Dinwiddie averaged 13.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game in 86 appearances. On April 24, 2014, he declared for the NBA Draft. The Detroit Pistons selected Dinwiddie with the 38th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He has since played for multiple teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards and currently the Brooklyn Nets.
