Clifford started playing basketball at a young age under the guidance of his father, Gerald Clifford who was the head coach at North Country Union High School. Clifford was an exceptional player during his high school. He was named Best Defensive player while playing for the University of Maine. However, his coaching career started at Woodland High School in 1983 where he was appointed as a teacher. Later he also worked as an assistant coach for Boston University, Fairfield University, and Siena College.

Steve Clifford started his NBA journey in 2001 with the New York Knicks as an assistant coach. Later, he worked with teams like the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Lakers in the same role.

In 2013, he became the head coach for the Charlotte Hornets. Under him, the Hornets went to the playoffs in 2014 and 2016. But, in 2018, after the Hornets didn't make the playoffs, he left the team.

That same year, the Orlando Magic hired him as their head coach. In his first season, the Magic made it to the playoffs. But, they lost early. After the 2021 season, where the Magic didn't make the playoffs, he left the team.
