Tyronn Lue is among the few players turned coaches who went on to have successful and highly impressive runs as head coach in the NBA. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lue was among the top scorers and players for the Nebraska Cornhuskers as he finished top five all-time in assists, three points made, three points attempted, and steals.
Entering the NBA after being selected 23rd overall in the 1998 Draft, Lue debuted for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1998-99 season. Lue played eleven seasons in the NBA and finished with a decent career average of 8.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 0.5 steals. Two years after retirement from active competition, Lue returned to the NBA in 2011 as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics, working alongside head coach Doc Rivers.
After Rivers's departure following the 2012-13 season, Lue spent one year with the LA Clippers before joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014. With over twenty years in the League, Lue is a three-time NBA Champion (2000, 2001, 2016) and a recipient of the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2016.
Tyronn Lue Contract Details
In 2020, Tyronn Lue signed a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers with the final year of the contract being a team option. Amidst the instances of experienced head coaches being fired after last season, Lue was successful in retaining his position, showing that the Clippers have trust in coach Lue’s potential.
Lue arrived for his second stint in Los Angeles in 2019 and spent a year as an assistant coach under Doc Rivers. After Rivers was confirmed as the Philadelphia 76ers new head coach, Lue was assigned his head coaching duties by the Clippers management.
In his first year as Clippers head coach, Lue finished with a 47-25 regular season record and led the team to the Western Conference Semis where they lost a closely-contested series to the Denver Nuggets. This past season, the Clippers qualified for the playoffs as the fifth seed and got eliminated in the first round by the Phoenix Suns.
Lue’s first stint as head coach began after David Blatt was surprisingly fired mid-season despite having led Cleveland to its second-ever NBA finals in 2015. Lue took over and helped the team to another finals appearance in 2016 where the Cavaliers pulled off perhaps the greatest comeback in NBA history and triumphed over the Golden State Warriors, lifting their first NBA championship.
During the off-season, Lue and the Cavaliers agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $35 Million. Till his departure, Lue coached the Cavaliers to back-to-back 50-plus regular season finishes, Eastern Conference titles, and consecutive NBA finals.
Tyronn Lue Salary
With an annual salary of $7.5 Million, not only does this make him one of the top-earning head coaches in the NBA, but a respectable one.
With two years left on Tyronn Lue’s deal, the Clippers still have a shot at bringing home their first NBA title. However, from a coaching standpoint, a championship run will depend on the success of team chemistry, more so than individual talent.
