According to 247Sports' Final 2020 national recruiting rankings, Clifford was rated as the best player in Colorado, a four-star recruit, and the 92nd-best prospect nationwide. As a freshman, Clifford played in 14 games for CU's senior-heavy team, scoring 14 points, dishing out five steals, and five assists in 4.0 mpg.

He shot 40 percent from three-point range and 45 percent from the field in his sophomore season, averaging 6.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. In terms of blocked shots, he tied Jabari Walker for the team lead (22). He was one of only four Buffaloes to play in all 35 games as a junior, averaging 5.9 points and 3.9 rebounds.
