Akshay Bhatia's father, Sunil "Sonny" Bhatia, was born in London but is originally from New Delhi, India. His business was real estate. Sonny used to take Akshay to Wakefield Golf Club on a regular basis before he was given his first set of golf clubs at the age of ten. The club now recognizes Akshay Bhatia as an honorary member.

Sunil remembers that one morning, Akshay woke him up and asked him how he could become the best golfer in the world. In response, he said he would be a better player and person if he arrived at the club first and left last.

Akshay Bhatia's mother, Renu, worked for a cruise liner ticketing company and managed a golf catering business as well. The birthplace of Renu Bhatia is Hyderabad, Telangana, India. On certain days, she says, they would play two rounds of golf with Akshay and spend nearly 13 hours a day together.
