Held in California, the Barracuda Championship is an alternate event on the PGA Tour; the winner is not invited to the Masters Tournament. Nonetheless, the victor is awarded a two-year exemption from the tour, 300 FedEx Cup points, 24 OWGR points, and a spot on the PGA Championship.
The event was presented with the privilege of giving entry to the Open Championship to the top non-exempt player when flooding in West Virginia in 2016 forced the cancellation of the Greenbrier Classic. In mid-2021, it was announced that the European Tour would sanction it in 2022.
Since 2012, the tournament has used the Modified Stableford scoring system, which was last used at the 2006 International in Colorado for a PGA Tour event.
In the 2023 season, the Barracuda Championship was won by Akshay Bhatia, defeating Patrick Rodgers in a playoff; Bhatia earned $684,000 of the $3.8 million purse. In the 2024 Barracuda Championship, Nick Dunlap defeated Vince Whaley and took home $720,000 of the $4 million purse, which was held at the Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Course from July 15 to July 21.
Barracuda Championship History
This alternate event, founded in 1999, is held each August. The event was moved to Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood course near Truckee, California, in 2020 from its previous location at Montrêux Golf & Country Club outside of Reno, Nevada.
It took place the same week as the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August, up until 2010. While the field for the WGC event was roughly 40, it had 156 golfers in its full field during its first three years. The field ultimately shrank to 132 golfers when the WGC event grew to roughly 80 players in 2002.
Following the FedEx Cup's 2007 introduction, the WGC event and the tournament were shifted from late August to early September. The 2010 Reno-Tahoe Open took place in mid-July, right before the Open Championship, a few weeks earlier, but it moved back to the prior format in mid-2011.
In 2022, there was a purse of $3.7 million, and the winner received a share of $666,000. The Legends at Sparks Marina became the event's first title sponsor in 2008. In 2010, the name was changed back to "Reno-Tahoe Open" after two years, and in 2014, the title sponsor changed to Barracuda Networks.
