The Arnold Palmer Invitational was originally a follow-up to the Florida Citrus Open Invitational, which was played through 1978; notably, Arnold Palmer won the event in 1971. The tournament has been played under many titles since 1979, with "Bay Hill" being one of the most common ones; Palmer has been the official name since 2007. It is held annually in March at the private property of Arnold Palmer in Bay Hill.
The winner would receive a three-year exemption, which is one more than normal Tour events and puts them on level with winners of the Memorial Tournament, the Tour Championship, and the World Golf Championships.
A custom that started with the 2017 event following Arnold Palmer's death in 2016 is that the victor gets a red cardigan sweater in his honor. The Open Qualifying Series expanded to include the event in 2019, granting entry into the Open Championship to a maximum of three non-exempt players.
Who won the PGA Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024?
Scottie Scheffler won the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Florida, earning his second Arnold Palmer Invitational victory. He took home the $4 million winner's share of the $20 million purse, along with 700 FedEx Cup points.
In a nearly flawless final round, Scheffler won by a wide margin on 15-under 273, which included a closing round of 66 in which he dominated from tee to green. Shane Lowry completed the top three with a 9-under total, while Wyndham Clark finished in solo second place with a 10-under total.
The 2024 winner's share was $40,000 more than the past season's $3.6 million, which should be the designated amount for signature events, with only the Players Championship offering more than that. But now there's another event that provides more: the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Who won the PGA Arnold Palmer Invitational 2023?
Kurt Kitayama earned his first PGA Tour victory in 2023 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The Californian withstood Rory McIlroy's charge after making three bogeys on the 9th hole in his final round. McIlroy gave him high praise and he earned $3.6 million for his efforts.
Finally, Kitayama hit a 48-foot putt that was only millimeters away from the cup. Observing from the scoring area, McIlroy was aware that his eight-under-par total would not be enough to advance to the playoffs. Kitayama's two-stroke birdie at the penultimate hole proved to be the crucial moment.
Kitayama shot to the ninth tee and led by two at 11 under. He hit his drive out of bounds, and on his third attempt, he discovered a bunker lie. Jordan Spieth was in the lead by the time he tapped in for a seven; day three saw Kitayama take a seven at the 4th hole as well.
Finishing at minus seven, Spieth was forced to make bogeys on three of the last five holes. Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton, and Patrick Cantlay all had similar final scores. Rory McIlroy and Harris English were the runner-ups.
