Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Tony Finau’s real name is Milton Pouha Finau. He has been married to Alayna Galea’I-Finau, and since then they have been blessed with four children named Jraice, Leilene Aiaga, Tony and Sage. His father, Kelepi, was a poor man who worked for Delta on night shifts. However, he supported them in their pursuit of golf by buying them second-hand equipment and constructing an improvised practice area in his garage. Six children, including Finau’s older brother Gipper, played on the Korn Ferry Tour. Unfortunately, Finau’s mother Ravena, who had been instrumental in guiding him towards golf, died from a car accident in 2011.

Finau acquired his maiden PGA Tour win when he won the Puerto Rico Open in 2016, defeating Steve Marino on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. His second PGA Tour victory came in the 2021 Northern Trust at Liberty National after a five-year and one hundred forty-two starts wait. Finau’s closest finish in a Major Championship was third place at Royal Portrush during the Open Championship in 2014.

In November of 2021, Finau scored a 59 at Silverleaf Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, with Jon Rahm as his partner. With eight straight birdies, he came home in just 28 strokes. However, this did not break the course record since Rahm had already shot 59 as well.

Finau’s debut came in 2018; he had already played at the Junior Ryder Cup for his country on two occasions, in 2004 and 2006. But he lost all those times. He made his second appearance at the Ryder Cup for Team USA in 2021 at Whistling Straits, where he was on the winning side, contributing one point from three matches.

The first sport of Finau’s was fire-knife dancing, a Samoan ritual. He is related to Jabari Parker, an NBA Basketball Player who plays for the Boston Celtics. His trainer is Boyd Summerhays, an ex-PGA Tour and elder brother to Daniel Summerhays, who has won over 8.9 million on the PGA Tour. Finau only uses Ping golf clubs and wears Nike gear from head to toe. When he was younger, Finau practised golf in his garage using a mattress as a makeshift net. He once stated that he would hit approximately 1000 balls per day.

In consecutive weeks during July’s end-of-year PGA Tour events, Finau secured victories at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the 3M Open, respectively, his third and fourth-ever PGA tour wins.
