Right then, we have had a fine opening game to kick off the Bengaluru leg. The two champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians went up against each other and it was an enthralling contest with the 2023 champions winning the match by four wickets. A young Kamalini, batting down the order, managed to get the ball past the infield on her offside ensuring that Mumbai Indians registered their second win of the tournament.
A short turnaround now for two of the five teams as the losing finalists of both editions, Delhi Capitals, will be in action against a team they faced not too long ago. UP Warriorz, who has had a very poor start to the tournament, will also be seen in action. The two teams met not too long ago, with one of them playing their third game of the tournament.
Delhi Capitals will be playing their fourth game of the tournament, a stage where they will find themselves halfway through their campaign. They started off their tournament with a nervy, last-ball win against Mumbai Indians. However, their dreamy start came crashing down when the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru trounced them comfortably. They made a comeback and a half as well, winning their last game off the penultimate delivery.
Shafali Verma and Niki Prasad played fine knocks with the bat in hand and managed to help DC get over the line in the first game. In the second game, they had Jemimah Rodrigues and Sarah Bryce add some substance to their total and in the third, it was Annabel Sutherland, Meg Lanning and Marizanne Kapp managed to chip in with the bat as well. The batting attack needs to combine their forces and ensure that they can post a good total at a venue that favours the batters.
Their bowling unit has also been at a good fence. Annabel Sutherland has been their leading wicket-taker after chipping in with the bat in hand and needs some help from the other end. Shikha Pandey is the second-highest wicket-taker behind Sutherland for the team, with three wickets in three hands, and one of the pacers or slower bowlers needs to chip in to aid the two.
UP Warriorz seemed to have hit the wrong not to start their tournament and they will want to rectify that as soon as possible. They come into this game on the back of two losses. In the opening game, it was Ashleigh Gardner's Gujarat Giants that won the game comfortably. In the second game, they ran in close against Delhi Capitals, but a lack of composure from them meant that the Capitals romped home with a win.
Their batting hasn't hit the straps, which has been a cause of concern for them. Kiran Navgire has been opening the batting in the absence of Alyssa Healy and has done a fine job. Batting down the order, Chinelle Henry has been a great addition as well. However, Tahila McGrath and Grace Harris have yet to find form in the middle order. Shweta Sehrawat too did a fine job in the last game but might need to speed up her scoring rate.
Their bowling unit has also not stood up to the challenge. Deepti Sharma has failed to lead her troops with the bowling attack only picking up seven wickets in two games. Sophie Ecclestone has picked up three of them in the two games with the others chiming in as well. They need to step up their job with the ball in hand and make sure that their fielding is also up to the task as well.
Head to head, Delhi Capitals have won three out of the four games the two sides have been involved in. UP Warriorz won only last year and by a slender margin of one run, will they manage to do something of that sort again or will Delhi Capitals continue their winning record in this match-up? Let's hold our horses to see how things will unfold in the contest.
