Last year's runners-up had very little work to do at the WPL Auction 2024. The Delhi Capitals did break the bank to acquire Annabel Sutherland though and their squad is shaping up superbly alright. Here's a look into their roster for the upcoming season!👇

19:01 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Let's look at the teams in detail then. Beginning with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who had a busy day today. Do they wear a better look than last season? Here's their full squad ahead of WPL 2024 - decide for yourselves!👇

18:52 (IST)9 DEC 2023

And the WPL Auction 2024 comes to a close!

Quite a day! Manic buzz leading into it and along expected lines, there were plenty of surprises and twists. A maximum of 30 players could have been purchased and so they were after a lot of to-and-fro between teams even as a number of them ended up as shrewd bargain picks.

It all began with Phoebe Litchfield heading to the Gujarat Giants after an intense battle with the UP Warriorz, who made up for it with a steal of an acquisition in Danni Wyatt who was bought at base price. The headline grabbers though were Annabel Sutherland and Kashvee Gautam, each of whom were acquired for a sum of ₹ 2 crore as the joint-highest buys of the auction with the Delhi Capitals and the Giants respectively securing them. Karnataka's Vrinda Dinesh also commanded a lot of attention before the Warriorz roped her in while Mumbai Indians have left themselves spoilt for choice with Shabnim Ismail joining their fold for ₹ 1.2 crore.

Of course, there are never any headlines at a player auction without some upsets. It came in the form of Chamari Athapaththu failing to attract a bid while Deandra Dottin met with the same fate. Kim Garth, Alana King and Devika Vaidya too had no takers although it was a happier day for Veda Krishnamurthy, with the Giants falling back on her experience for the new season. Tara Norris will not return to the WPL for the second season although Scotland's Kathryn Bryce was the lone Associate player to have been snapped up as the Giants continued their busy day at the office.

All in all, it was just like any other player auction - tense, dramatic and at its unpredictable best. The teams are now set for the second season of this magnificent revolution in the women's game in India and with some new faces, both Indian and overseas, heading in for the tournament which is likely to be played in February, the build-up towards WPL 2024 could not have been set up any better.

18:17 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Let's hear from Sourav Ganguly: First time but I was involved last year. I just finished the Presidentship and I set the team up but I didn't come to the auction since it was within two weeks. This is a great tournament. It's fortunate that it started when I was in the board and it's only going to go up. You've heard good things about it. There is always someone who will break the bank whether it's the men's IPL or the women's. I'm really happy for them. You saw another Indian player go for big money. This tournament is only going to get bigger. We came close last year, we lost the finals to Mumbai. Ashwani Kumari is someone to keep an eye on since she can hit the ball a long way. We needed a backup keeper to Sneha (Deepthi) and we got her. T20 you never know which way it goes. The best teams sometimes don't win - because of form or other reasons. The same thing happened last year since we lost the final. Hopefully we can continue that form this year. (On captain Meg Lanning) She's a big player in women's cricket to me and a captain - she has won World Cups as a captain. It's a phenomenal achievement. Her commitment last year was outstanding, her training and what she does is really really brilliant. Whatever you did playing for the country is most important. She's just 32 and she will be available for franchise cricket. A lot of players are going that way in cricket. She's a fantastic captain. This is a huge tournament and I'm very happy as to where it went in the first year. This was always in our minds but it got pushed because of COVID. When I first came in 2019 and I left last year, the women's team has grown much more than the men's team. The women's team, from where they were to where they are, winning Asia Cups, the Commonwealth Games - we were the best team in the Commonwealth Games until the last five overs. The Smritis, Harmans, Richa Ghosh, Jemimah, Shafali - they've come along really well.

17:53 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Alright then. This is how things stand - MI and DC are done with their rosters while UP Warriorz can sign one more player. Gujarat Giants can rope in two more Indian players while RCB can sign three including one overseas player.

17:52 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Players sold in accelerated round 1:

Lauren Cheatle - Gujarat Giants (₹30 lakh)
Kathryn Bryce - Gujarat Giants (₹10 lakh)
Mannat Kashyap - Gujarat Giants (₹10 lakh)
Ashwani Kumari - Delhi Capitals (₹10 lakh)
Fatima Jaffer - Mumbai Indians (₹10 lakh)
Keerthana Balakrishnan - Mumbai Indians (₹10 lakh)
Shubha Satheesh - Royal Challengers Bangalore (₹10 lakh)

17:51 (IST)9 DEC 2023

All-rounder Tanisha Singh from Delhi is the last player in the list. But no bids for her I'm afraid. Unsold!

17:50 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Shubha Satheesh, who has been picked in India's Test squad to play England and Australia, is up next. And the paddle goes up at the Bangalore table. RCB take the player at her base price of ₹ 10 lakh!

17:48 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Bhavana Goplani is also unsold. Devika K ends up looking for a bidder in vain too, as does Priyanka Koushal.

17:47 (IST)9 DEC 2023

No bids for Paige Schofield of England. Anushka Sharma of India also has no taker, much like Iris Zwilling of The Netherlands.

17:45 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Spin bowler Fatima Jaffer is up next and MI have spotted something in her. Keep an eye out then folks - Fatima Jaffer could be the next big MI talent to emerge. She goes for ₹ 10 lakh. And they're not done yet - all-rounder Keerthana Balakrishnan also heads to MI for the same price.

17:44 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Brisbane Heat's Nicola Hancock is seeking a team. Only RCB can sign her considering the rest have completed their overseas rosters. Bangalore aren't keen though. No takers for the teenage talent Millicent Illingworth either from Australia.

17:43 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Ashwani Kumari is the next player up for bidding and there's just one bid from Delhi. That is that - Delhi Capitals complete their auction by signing Kumari for ₹ 10 lakh.

17:42 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Now then. Time for Mannat Kashyap. She's currently with the Indian team as part of the T20I series against England. And it's a good day for her as she bags a gig with Gujarat Giants for ₹ 10 lakh. How about an international debut later today to top it off? We'll find out soon!

17:42 (IST)9 DEC 2023

How about Scotland's Kathryn Bryce? Oh yes there's a bid - Gujarat Giants go up again and this could complete their overseas roster. It does - Bryce joins the Giants at ₹ 10 lakh as the first Associate player to be bought today.

17:40 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Kirstie Gordon of England is up next. But no bids for the left-arm spinner today. Dhara Gujjar, who turned out for MI last year, is looking for a taker herself. No bids though!

17:39 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Lauren Cheatle, the left-arm seamer who plays for the Sydney Sixers is looking for a bid. And the Gujarat Giants are the ones who put the paddle up. Giants take Cheatle for ₹ 30 lakh!

17:37 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Right then. Time for the accelerated process. Australian all-rounder Nicola Carey is the first name out. But there is no bid just yet in this accelerated round so she's unsold. Alice-Davidson Richards of England meets the same fate.

17:36 (IST)9 DEC 2023

BIG BREAKING: Chamari Athapaththu's name hasn't been listed for the accelerated round. Is that it then for her WPL dream?

17:29 (IST)9 DEC 2023

Interestingly enough, the Gujarat Giants have two overseas slots left and a whopping ₹ 2.35 crore to spend. Who will they target, we wonder! They could do with an overseas quick alright but having bailed out on Shabnim Ismail, who will they go for now?

17:25 (IST)9 DEC 2023
