Winfield played his college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 2016 to 2019. While playing for the Golden Gophers he won multiple awards such as First-team All-Big Ten in 2019, Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year in 2019, and Unanimous All-American in 2019. After the end of the 2019 season, Winfield announced his decision to forgo his remaining college eligibility and declare for the 2020 NFL draft.
