In February 2017, DeMeco Ryans got his first coaching job in the NFL when the San Francisco 49ers hired him as their defensive quality control coach. Prior to his first coaching job, Ryans was a linebacker who played ten seasons in the NFL with the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles. Transitioning from a former player in 2016 to a coaching staff in a little less than a year was not too difficult for the Alabama native. Within a year he was already promoted to the inside linebackers coach position and a few years later to the defensive coordinator position.

Ryans as a player was nothing short of a quality linebacker himself. By the time he ended his playing career, he was only 30 tackles shy of a combined 1,000 tackles. With little over 700 solo tackles, 41 pass deflections, 7 interceptions and 13.5 sacks, he provided a decent amount of production for both the Texans and Eagles. More importantly, it is the mentality with which he played the game that he is bringing to the players he coaches nowadays.

In a media session after his appointment as the head coach, Ryans was seen saying that it will be easy to get after the team for not making the right plays, but it won't lead to anything positive. It is more important to encourage them so they feel confident and have their mind dialed into the next play. It was touching to hear such from a former player who understands what it is like to be on the field and under pressure.

Where is DeMeco Ryans going to coach?

DeMeco Ryans was appointed as the head coach of the Houston Texans on January 31, 2023. Starting out in coaching in 2017, DeMeco Ryans established himself as a great linebackers coach for four years with the 49ers.

Building a great bond with the players and with consistent effort, he has been a top level defensive coordinator for the past two years. His excellent work with the players behind the scenes was evident on the field as a result of which few teams were interested in signing him for the top job. Eventually, Ryans is returning to the same place where his NFL career as a player began to kickstart his career as a head coach.

DeMeco Ryans deal with Texans

The contract details of the head coaches and other coaching staff members are not as openly revealed to the media and general public as those of the players. In that sense, how much money the Texans are shelling out to their new head coach DeMeco Ryans is unknown. Taking into account the average salary of a head coach in the league, it amounts to approximately $6 million annually, while the top tier coaches earn between $8 to $12 million annually.

As Ryans is a first-time head coach, we can deduce that his salary may be a few million dollars less than the league average at the moment. One thing we do know for sure is that he has penned a deal for the next six years meaning that if all goes well he will lead the team till 2028.

It seems that the Texans are quite optimistic that they have found the perfect fit for the organization as a six year deal is way ahead in the future especially considering that the previous two head coaches for the franchise lasted only one season each. However, with the impact that Ryans has had as a defensive coordinator in San Francisco, there is a lot of hope that he can change things for the better with the struggling Texas outfit.
