There are a total of seven rounds in the NFL draft. In every round, all 32 teams are given one draft pick. The allotment is determined by the standing in which the teams finish the previous NFL season. This amounts to 224 picks at minimum. Due to the trades between teams, certain teams may end up with more picks while the other team ends up with fewer.
In addition to these 224 draft picks, the league awards additional picks, known as compensatory picks. These happen when the team loses players in free agency or if the other teams hire minority front-office staff and coaches (via Pro Football Network).
