Even in the twilight of his career, Joe Flacco is still a sought after quarterback in the league due to his experience which was seen in March 2024, when Indianapolis Colts inked him to a 1-year contract to mentor and back up Anthony Richardson. After DeShaun Watson was ruled out for the rest of the season last year, it looked like the Cleveland Browns’ playoff hopes were going down the drain. Despite having a fantastic defense, led by Myles Garrett, the lack of offensive firepower was a major hurdle that the team failed to solve. Entered Joe Flacco, who put the team on his back and led them to the playoffs with 4 wins in 5 games.
Flacco would cement himself as one of the better quarterbacks in the league, under his rookie-scale deal with the Baltimore Ravens. In the final year of that deal, he would truly cement himself in the history books with an all-time great playoff run. But, once the ink dried on the season, few could argue otherwise.
After rejecting the initial contract extension, Flacco would finish the season with similar numbers to his previous seasons. However, it was the playoffs where he would truly shine. En route to beating both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, Flacco would lead the charge for the Ravens to a Super Bowl XLVII victory.
During the run, he would tally three straight games with a passer rating over 100, throwing three touchdowns in each of those games. Further, his 11 passing touchdowns were the most for a single playoff run, and also the most touchdowns without an interception in playoff history.
Flacco would sign a six-year deal with the Ravens in the next offseason, worth $120 million, the most in NFL history for a quarterback. But, the first year was objectively the worst of his career, with career lows in almost every category, leading many to believe that the 2012 run was a fluke. However, the next year, he would enjoy the single-best season, this time finding high numbers during the regular season.
Unfortunately, a torn ACL and MCL would take Flacco out 10 weeks into one of his worst-performing years from a team standpoint. The last few years would see his play continue to diminish. Eventually, a hip injury saw Lamar Jackson replace him in the lineup and on the team.
In 2019, Flacco was traded to the Denver Broncos. In eight games, he would post similarly mediocre numbers as his last few seasons with the Ravens. The next season, he became a member of the New York Jets, where he would spend two stints, both average at best.
After the 2022 season, with Aaron Rodgers coming to New York, the team could find no use for Flacco and he was left as a free agent. Thankfully, the Browns came calling and somehow, the veteran discovered his early-2010s form when he took the Browns to the playoffs.
