The following season, he played 16 games while starting 10 and recording 649 snaps. In exchange for a fifth-round selection in 2019, the 49ers acquired Tomlinson via trade. The season after that, Tomlinson became a member of the New York Jets as a free agent, where, throughout two seasons, he played 2,213 snaps. Before joining Houston in 2025, Tomlinson had a 1-year stint with the Seattle Seahawks.

Tomlinson joined Duke University for his collegiate football career. During his freshman season, according to the Sporting News, he was a first-team freshman all-American pick and was an Academic All-ACC selection. In 2012, he was a recipient of the Sonny Falcone Iron Duke Award and received the program’s K.D. Kennedy Iron Devil Award. The following season, he was named to the second-team All-ACC and the ACC and national All-Bowl Teams. In 2014, he was a recipient of the Courage Award and was named to the first team All-American, the first team All-ACC, and the Consensus All-American.
