Matthew Charles Eberflus is an American football head coach for the Chicago Bears in the NFL, as of 2024 NFL season. Eberflus was named as the head coach for the Bears on January 27, 2022. As of September 2024, Eberflus has coached two University teams and four teams in the NFL. He began his coaching career in 1992 as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Toledo.

Eberflus attended the University of Toledo for collegiate football where he played as a linebacker. Eberflus received a degree in Education in 1993. Prior to attending college, Eberflus was enrolled at Whitmer High School.

Matt Eberflus' Early Life, Personal Life, and Family Background

Born on May 17, 1970 in Toledo, Ohio, Eberflus completed his high school graduation from Whitmer High School. Eberflus belongs to a football background as Eberflus’ father, the late Stanley Eberflus, passed away in 2015 due to ALS. Eberflus’ mother, Joanne worked part time at a department store, according to Chicago Bears’ official news website.

Eberflus was a coach at the University of Toledo for the first nine years of his coaching tenure which began in 1992. Following that, Eberflus coached at the University of Missouri between 2001 and 2008. He received his first opportunity to coach in the NFL as a linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns. In 2011, Eberflus worked with the Dallas Cowboys. Following that, Eberflus joined the Indianapolis Colts as a defensive coordinator in 2018. In 2022, Eberflus was appointed as the head coach for the Chicago Bears.

University of Toledo (1992-2000)

Eberflus’ coaching career commenced in 1992 as a student assistant coach at the University of Toledo. Prior to working full-time as a recruiting coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 1994, he worked as a graduate assistant in 1993. Between 1996 and 1998, Eberflus worked as an outside linebackers coach. Eberflus was a defensive backs coach at Toledo during his final two years in 1999 and 2000.

University of Missouri (2001-2008)

In 2001, Eberflus moved to the University of Missouri (at Columbia) as a defensive coordinator under head coach Gary Pinkel. Eberflus was named the associate head coach along with being a defensive coordinator in 2006.

Cleveland Browns (2009-2010)

After leaving Missouri for the NFL in 2009, Eberflus joined the Cleveland Browns as a linebackers coach for two seasons.

Dallas Cowboys (2011-2017)

In 2011, Eberflus joined the Dallas Cowboys as a Linebackers Coach. In the 2011 NFL season, five of Dallas' top-10 tacklers and three of the top-five tacklers came from Eberflus' linebacker unit. In 2016, Eberflus was the position of Passing Game Coordinator along with his linebacker coaching duties.

Indianapolis Colts (2018-2021)

In 2018, Eberflus was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, under head coach Frank Reich. The Colts' rushing defense rose from No. 26 in 2017 to No. 8 in 2018 under Eberflus' leadership.

Chicago Bears (2022-Present)

The Chicago Bears made Eberflus their head coach in 2022. Even though the Bears won Eberflus’ debut game, they had a difficult remainder of the season. In 2023, after defensive coordinator Alan Williams quit after Week 2, Eberflus also assumed responsibility as the defensive coordinator. However, the Bears placed last in the division for the second consecutive season.

Matt Eberflus’ Playing Career

Eberflus played collegiate football at the University of Toledo as a linebacker from 1988-1991. With that, he was a three-year starter, a four-year letterman and the team captain. In 2004, he was incorporated into Toledo’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
