Injuries are, unfortunately, a part and parcel of the game. Since the inception of the sport, injuries have affected, altered, and sometimes completely changed a player’s trajectory. While the last point is extreme, for Robert Griffin III, it was an unfortunate reality. One of the most decorated collegiate football athletes burst onto the scene in the NFL and was poised to dominate. However, tragedy struck.

Born in Okinawa, Japan to US Army sergeants, he moved to Washington and then Louisiana before settling down in Texas. Attending the Cobra's Cafe High School, he played basketball football as well as track and became a quarterback for his final two seasons. A dual-threat quarterback unlike seen before, he finished with over 2,000 yards rushing, as well as 3,000 yards passing. At the same time, he was a phenomenal back athlete as well, winning the Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award his junior year. After a long recruitment process, Griffin committed to the University of Baylor which coincidentally also had a strong track and field program. His running career took off during his college years as he finished first place in the 400-meter hurdles at the Big-12 Conference Championship as well as breaking the NCAA Midwest Regional record. Extremely studios, he graduated in three years with a Bachelor’s degree in political science and was studying for a Master’s degree in communications before being named the Arthur Ashe Junior School scholar.

RG3 immediately made an impact as a true freshman, earning Big 12 Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year. However, he had to sit out a majority of the 2009 season due to a tear in his ACL. Returning next year, he was phenomenal, compiling over 4,000 yards combined to go with 30 total touchdowns. His 2011 season, however, was one for the history books. He entered a record-setting season that saw him earn the highest honor in college football, the Heisman Trophy. For the season, he compiled almost 5,000 yards total along with 47 touchdowns. However, his completion percentage of 72.4 and 189.5 rating became the hallmark of greatness and his calling card.

While Andrew Luck was the clear-cut No.1 pick, Robert was widely regarded as the second-best player in the draft. Unsurprisingly, he went second overall to the Washington Redskins who traded up for the pick. He immediately exploded onto the scene, winning Offensive Player of the Week in his debut game, becoming the first to do so in NFL history. His strong streak continued as he became the youngest player in NFL history to have a perfect passer rating. Unfortunately, a controversial injury forced him out of action. However, he still finished the season with the highest passer rating by a rookie quarterback, along with the highest TD-INT ratio. He earned Pro Bowl honors and earned the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, while also becoming a member of the All-Rookie Team.

Unfortunately, the injury bug that caught him at the end of the season would come to define his entire career as his rookie season would come be to the last high point for Griffin as an athlete.

Robert Griffin III’s Jersey Number

Throughout his career with Baylor and subsequent shift to the NFL, RG3 wore the #10 jersey. In his last stop with the Baltimore Ravens, he shifted to the number 3. After a legendary rookie season, injuries hampered his playing time and production in the subsequent years as he fell further down the depth chart, he eventually made his way over to Cleveland. However, injuries again plagued him and he eventually moved to the Baltimore Ravens, where he played for three years, but was once more haunted by injuries and continued to fall down the depth chart.
