Samuel Duke Howell, commonly known as Sam Howell, is a young American football quarterback, representing the Washington Commanders of the National Football League. After being the team’s third-string quarterback during his rookie season, he succeeded in stepping up as the starting quarterback for the 2023 campaign. Howell was born in Waynesville, North Carolina and spent his formative years in Union County, North Carolina where he enrolled at Sun Valley High School and began playing high school football. He concluded his high school journey with over 13,000 passing yards and recorded 145 touchdowns along with over 3,000 rushing yards and 60 touchdowns.

After concluding his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, he entered the 2022 NFL Draft. Despite being projected as an early pick, he was selected as the 144th pick by the Washington Commanders in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He signed a rookie four-year contract with the Commanders valued at $4.02 million. During his rookie season, he had limited playing time, only getting a chance to start in the last regular season game in week 18, when the team was already eliminated from playoff contention.

Howell attended the University of North Carolina from 2019 to 2021, opting out of the remaining college eligibility after graduation to enter the 2022 NFL Draft.

His collegiate career is marked with a plethora of achievements and accolades, making him a star player. During freshman year, he clinched the title of ACC Rookie of the Year for his outstanding performance. Additionally, he secured the 2019 Military Bowl MVP after throwing for three touchdowns, along with a touchdown catch in a 55-13 win against the Temple Owls Football team. His list of achievements is adorned with third-team All-ACC honors in 2019, and second-team All-ACC honors in 2020.

Sam Howell College Career

Initially committing to play college football at Florida State University, he later chose to play for the University of North Carolina. Howell concluded his freshman season in 2019, setting a freshman FBS record by completing 259 out of 422 passes for 3,641 yards and securing 38 touchdowns.

During his sophomore season, Howell led the team as a starting QB with an 8-4 record and concluded the season with 3,586 yards, recording 30 touchdowns.

In his junior season, he recorded 3,056 yards and 24 touchdowns, finishing his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina with a total of 10,283 yards and 92 touchdown passes.
