
Shane Steichen is an American football head coach for the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL. Steichen began his coaching tenure as a student graduate assistant at UNLV in 2007. However, his career in the NFL began with the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Chargers) in 2011. Furthermore, he guided different positional groups of two other NFL teams, before getting the head coach job in 2023. Steichen attended Oak Ridge High School, where he began his football journey. He enrolled at the University of Nevada in 2003, where he graduated with a degree in journalism and media studies in 2006. His time with the Rebels saw him play at a quarterback position for four years, before joining his alma mater as a graduate assistant.

Shane Steichen's Early Life
Shane Steichen was born in Sacramento, California on May 11, 1985. He got his secondary education from Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, California. His high school QB career saw him earn MVP honors from the daily newspaper Sacramento Bees for leading his team to the conference sectional title in 2002.
When not busy preparing a game plan for opposing teams, Shane spends his time listening to classical music and reading Russian literature, as per the Athletic. Steichen also likes fishing in summer, skiing, playing golf and listening to the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, as per the Athletic.

UNLV (2007 - 2009)
Steichen joined UNLV as a student graduate assistant in 2007. However, he was promoted to the position of offensive graduate assistant for the next two seasons.
Louisville (2010)
Steichen became the offensive graduate assistant at Louisville in 2010 and stayed there for a year, before embarking on his NFL journey.
San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Chargers) (2011 - 2012)
Steichen’s NFL career began when he was appointed as the defensive assistant for the San Diego Chargers in 2011 and he served in that position for the next two years.
Cleveland Browns (2013)
In 2013, Steichen was appointed as the offensive quality control coach for the Cleveland Browns under head coach, Rob Chudzinski. He also went on to assist quarterbacks that year and under his tutelage, each of the three starting Browns QBs posted a 300-yard passing game, which was the first time in franchise history.
San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers (second stint) (2014 - 2020)
In 2014, Steichen rejoined the Chargers as offensive quality control coach for two years and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2016. Under his guardianship, Chargers quarterback, Philip Rivers, ranked second in passing yards, fourth in completions, and fourth in touchdown passes over the next four years, while also getting selected to three pro bowls during the same period.
After getting promoted as an interim offensive coordinator in 2019, the offensive unit ranked fifth in the league in total yards per game, sixth in passing yards per game, and seventh in third-down percentage. After getting promoted as a full-time offensive coordinator in 2020, Steichen once again worked his magic, now with a rookie quarterback in Justin Herbert. Herbert won the Rookie of the Year award in 2020, passing for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns, which is a rookie record. The Chargers finished top 10 in most offensive metrics in Steichen’s first season as an offensive coordinator like yards per game, passing yards per game, first downs per game, third down percentage per game, etc.
Philadelphia Eagles (2021 - 2022)
In 2021, Steichen joined the Philadelphia Eagles as an Offensive Coordinator and was tasked to train the first-round rookie quarterback, Jalen Hurts. Under new head coach Nick Sirrianni,, Steichen was the catalyst of the NFL’s most potent rushing offense, which saw the Eagles finish the season with 2,715 rushing yards, which is the most in franchise history. The 2022 NFL season saw Philadelphia’s offense burst through the scene by finishing top 10 in multiple categories like yards per game, points per game, passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, third-down percentage, fourth-down percentage, red zone percentage, etc. The 2022 Eagles team featured two 1,000-yard receivers and 6 pro bowlers on the offensive side of the ball.
However, Steichen’s best work in Philly came in the form of developing young Jalen Hurts. After getting the opportunity as a starter in 2021, Hurts under Steichen’s tutelage saw an increase in his completion percentage (compared to 2020), while throwing for more than 3,100 yards and rushing for almost 800 yards in his first year as a starter. Hurts set a career-high in most offensive categories like completions, passing yards, passing touchdowns, passer rating, and rushing touchdowns during Steichen’s second year as OC.
Indianapolis Colts (2023 - Present)
On 14th February 2023, Steichen was appointed as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Even after losing their quarterback star, Anthony Richardson, the Colts finished with a record of 9-8, 5 wins more than the previous season.
