Khalil Mack is a standout linebacker in the NFL, currently playing for the Los Angeles Chargers. Born on February 22, 1991, Mack made his mark in college football at the University of Buffalo, setting NCAA records for forced fumbles and career tackles for loss. Drafted fifth overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2014 NFL Draft, Mack quickly established himself in the league. In 2015, he made history by becoming the first player to earn first-team All-Pro honors at two different positions, defensive end and outside linebacker, in the same season.

After a high-profile trade to the Chicago Bears in 2018, he signed a six-year, $141 million contract, briefly making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. Mack was traded to the Chargers in 2022, continuing to shine.

Why did the Bears trade Khalil Mack?

First of all the Bears were in a tight spot mostly with regards to their financial matters. As it so happens, his contract was already restricted twice. In an attempt to win in the present, they back-loaded his contract for the last two years. As a result, the Bears knew that at some point of time, they would need to take a big hit.

Secondly, the Bears were also not in a good position for the draft that year as they had only four picks as compared to most other teams who had seven. The franchise was looking to rebuild and for that, they needed more quality members on the team at the expense of one superb talent. The additional cap space by trading Mack would give the team much more flexibility in finding better players over more areas of the field.

And finally, the Bears may have been weary of the fact that Khalil Mack had slowed down just a little in his production. He picked up some injuries also along the way and playing at a position that requires a lot of athleticism, age was also a factor to be considered. A linebacker entering his early thirties is generally a sign that his best years are more likely than not behind him.

Factoring in all these things, the decision may prove to be the correct one in hindsight, but given the skill and ability of the former Bears linebacker, we just can’t be sure yet.
