Davante Adams: A Brief Biography

Davante Lavell Adams (born December 24, 1992) is an American football wide receiver for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Fresno State, and was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, with five straight Pro Bowl selections, 2 consecutive First-team All Pro awards and having been a recent touchdowns receiving leader.

Davante Adams’ Early Life and Background

Adams was born to Douglas Adams and Pamela Brown on December 24, 1992. He has a brother and two sisters. From East Palo Alto, California, Adams attended Palo Alto High School in neighboring Palo Alto, California. As a senior two-way starter for the Vikings football team, he led the school to a CIF state championship. He had 64 receptions for 1,094 yards and 12 touchdowns, and as a cornerback on defense he totaled 44 tackles, including two for a loss, two forced fumbles, an interception, and four passes defended.He also played basketball and was considered a two-star recruit in that sport. Over his four years in basketball, he averaged 9.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists as a senior.He was recruited by Fresno State, California, Hawai'i, and San Diego State. Adams committed to play college football at Fresno State. He made his collegiate debut after being redshirted in his first college year. Davante was named Freshman of the Year in his first season of playing for the Fresno State Bulldogs. In his second season with Fresno State, he already set the college record for receptions (233) and touchdown receptions (38). In his final season of college football Adams also set a Mountain West Conference record with 24 touchdown receptions (which was the highest for any college player in 2013). He also led the national college football in 2013 with 1719 receiving yards. He decided to forego his two remaining college years to declare for the NFL Draft.

Who Drafted Davante Adams?

Adams was selected in the second round with the 53rd overall pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was the ninth wide receiver to be selected that year. Only Odell Beckham Jr. made a splash quite as big as Adams and credit where it’s due to the Packers scouting department. The 2014 NFL Draft class had some other notable players too. Some of them include wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and linebacker Khalil Mack. On June 12, 2014, he signed a contract with the Packers.

Davante Adams’ NFL Journey

Selected by the Packers in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft, Davante Adams emerged as one of the most explosive and versatile offensive weapons in the NFL, earning All-Pro honors in 2020 and 2021 and his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl selection in 2021. He also was the NFL receiving touchdowns leader in 2020.

Davante Adams was put in the number four receiver slot for the Packers. He played 16 games in his rookie season and strong performances also made him get 11 starts. Adams made it to the NFC Championship in his rookie season but lost to the Seattle Seahawks. He missed three games in the beginning stages of the 2015 season after an ankle injury. His second season with the Packers was underwhelming. Adams made a strong comeback in the 2016 season and finished the season as the Packers’ second-leading receiver (997 yards for 75 catches and 12 touchdowns). He was surpassed by his teammate Jordy Nelson.

In the 2017 season, he received his first Pro-Bowl and was tied second in the league for receiving touchdowns till an injury in Week 15 made him miss the final games of the season.

Adams also set the Packers’ rookie record for receiving yards in a playoff game with 117 in the victory over the Dallas Cowboys. He was named to his first Pro Bowl and was ranked 45th by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018.

On December 29, 2017, Adams signed a four-year, $58 million contract extension with the Packers.Adams had a formidable season in 2018 with the return of Aaron Rodgers to the team (after injury). Adams reached the NFC Championship for a third time with the Packers in the 2019 Playoffs but lost to the Seattle Seahawks. In the postseason games, Adams became the only Packer with two games with at least 100 receiving yards in a single postseason and three postseason games with at least 125 receiving yards in a career.

Adams broke the Packers franchise record for receiving yards in a single season after catching for 1553 yards. This was in his final season with the Packers (2021). The Packers placed a franchise tag on him but he refused to play with the tag. He was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders on 18th March 2022. He signed a five-year deal worth $141.25 million, making him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL.On March 8, 2022, the Packers placed a franchise tag on Adams. On March 14, Adams informed the Packers that he would not play under the franchise tag for the 2022 season. Four days later, the Packers traded Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for their 2022 first-round pick and second-round pick. Along with the trade, Adams signed a five-year, $141.25M deal, making him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL at the time of the signing. The trade also reunited Adams with his college quarterback Derek Carr, with both playing together at Fresno State from 2012 to 2013.
