Fraser started out as an actor in New York City. Fraser made his acting debut in Dogfight in the year 1990. Fraser only had one marriage to Afton Smith, with whom he had three boys. Following their divorce, Fraser was required to pay Smith $25,000 per month in child support. Fraser speaks French with ease. Fraser underwent numerous surgeries as well. After accusing the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association of sexual assault, he was 'blacklisted' by Hollywood.

He made a comeback in the 2022 film The Whale, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Drama. For The Whale, he received the Critics' Choice Award. For his role as Rick O'Connell in The Mummy Trilogy(1999-2008), for which Fraser has received worldwide recognition. In fantasy films like Bedazzled and Journey to the Center of the Earth, he played the lead role.

In addition, he appeared in a few TV shows, including The Affair, Trust, and the HBO Max series Doom Patrol, which is based on the eponymous DC comics. He portrayed Cliff Steele/Robotman in Doom Patrol. In Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, which also stars Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, Fraser has been cast.
