Nüsret Gökçe, known as Salt Bae, was born and raised in Erzurum, Turkey in Paşal, a village in the Enkaya district of Erzurum Province in Turkey, to a Khurdish Family. His father, Faik, was a mineworker. At the age of 11–12, he was forced to leave school to work as a butcher's apprentice in the Kadköy district of Istanbul because of his family's finances.

During his twenties, Gökçe moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to learn more about their beef and the art of butchering. His dream of opening a restaurant intensified as he learned more about steak.

He now owns 22 restaurants worldwide and owns residences around the world, two of his most notably properties are Macka Palace in the Sisli district of Istanbul, and a villa in Beverly Hills. It was recently reported that Salt Bae functions out of Abu Dhabi.

In several countries, including Argentina and the United States, Gökçe worked in local restaurants for free to get experience as a cook and restaurateur. His first restaurant opened in Istanbul in 2010, and he later opened a restaurant in the United Arab Emirates in the same year. Through a series of viral Internet videos and memes that showed him suavely cutting meat and sprinkling salt, such as “Ottoman Steak,” Salt Bae became more widely known in January 2017.

The post was seen 10 million times on Instagram, and he was dubbed 'Salt Bae' because of his unusual way of sprinkling salt. He dropped it from his fingertips to his forearm and then onto the dish. Since this post, Gökçe's profile has greatly expanded, and he has served many celebrities and politicians from around the world.

Gokce was criticized online after he handed the trophy to the winner of the World Cup in December 2022. Therefore, FIFA initiated an investigation into Gökçe's actions during the final.

Early professional reviews of his New York City steakhouse in 2018 were generally negative despite his international fame. Joshua David Stein wrote in GQ and called the steak mundane and the hamburgers overcooked, according to Steve Cuozzo from the New York Post.

The meat was tough with globs of fat and gristle, and severely lacking in flavor, according to other critics who described the dishes as over-salted as they are overpriced. Reviewers said that the dining experience was too expensive.

However, for entertainment, reviewers were more positive. Eater's Robert Sietsema states, “If you are intent on judging New York's new branch of Nusr-Et only as a steakhouse, you'll probably be disappointed … If, on the other hand, you appraise the place as dinner theater, you will find it satisfying—but only if Salt Bae is in the house”
