Cade McNamara is an American football quarterback who currently plies his trade with the Iowa State Hawkeyes of the Big Ten Conference. He was the previous starting quarterback of the Michigan Wolverines from 2019 to 2022. The 6-1, 205 pounder from Reno, Nevada was a four-star prospect coming out of Damonte Ranch High School where was voted Gatorade Player of the Year twice in 2017 and 2018.
He was the first player in the state’s history to win the esteemed honor in back-to-back seasons. Cade is the state’s all-time leader in career passing yards (12,804) and career touchdown passes (146). He was rated the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect by most sports outlets.
McNamara embarked on his collegiate football journey with Michigan having initially committed to play for Notre Dame and also had offers from Alabama, Georgia and USC in 2019 but was redshirted in his freshman season and did not see any action.
After appearing in only four games in 2020, McNamara started all 14 games for Michigan the following season throwing for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns, with six interceptions. After winning the Big Ten championship in 2021 with the Wolverines, McNamara entered the transfer portal in 2022 and transferred to the Iowa Hawkeyes with two years of eligibility remaining.
He could play only five games in 2023 before sustaining a season-ending knee injury that cut his year short but McNamara still completed 52% of his passes for 505 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. The former Wolverine is expected to make a full recovery and turn around Hawkeyes’ offense in the 2024 season.
