Sawyer redshirted his freshman year and competed in only two games in 2018 and 2019 combined, followed by only one appearance in 2020.

In 2021, Sawyer saw action in five games, followed by all 13 games in 2022 as a junior and then seven games in 2023 as a senior. In 2020, he was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, and then again in 2021. Sawyer was also Houston’s second-leading kick returner in 2022 during his junior year.
