Born on September 13, 2002, Leonard started his journey at Fairhope High School in Fairhope, Alabama where he had 500 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns passing for 1,900 yards as a senior. Despite many offers from college football institutions including Nebraska, Syracuse, and Tulane, Riley Leonard committed to Duke University. In 2021, he was a freshman at Duke, participating in seven games with one start. He completed 37 out of 62 passes for 381 yards, one touchdown, and one interception during the season. When Leonard returned for his sophomore season in 2022, he was named the starting quarterback.
