Sebastian Castro is an American football defensive back who has entered his final year of college football with Iowa Hawkeyes. Castro started playing high school football career at the Richards High School where he played as both defensive back and quarterback. He was the team captain as a junior and senior and earned the SSC Red Player of the Year in both those years. As a three-year defensive back for the Bulldogs, Castro totaled 210 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 11 interceptions and seven pass breakups. A successful high school career earned him a three-star recruit status receiving offers from Ball State, Iowa State, Illinois, Minnesota, Notre Dame, and Syracuse but he chose to become a Hawkeye in 2019.
As a freshman in 2019, Castro did not see any action and redshirted the season. In 2021 as a redshirt sophomore, Castro appeared in all 14 games racking up six tackles in four games but most playing on special teams. In 2022, Castro saw action in all 13 games recording 22 solo tackles and 12 assists. He had a fantastic 2023 season where he tallied 67 total tackles, eight pass breakups, and a forced fumble. After five years at Iowa, Castro decided to return to the program for his sixth season using his extra COVID-19 year of eligibility in 2024. After a brilliant 2023 season, Castro was named Esquina’s College Football Player of the Year.
