He played primarily at the 'rover' position a hybrid role between safety and linebacker. Over the season, he appeared in 11 games, accumulating 15 total tackles.

By the 2022 season, Watts had established himself as a key player on defense. He started four games and finished with 39 total tackles, including a career-high of nine tackles against USC. His defensive skills began to shine through as he notched four pass deflections throughout the season. The 2023 season proved to be a breakout year for Watts. He led the NCAA with seven interceptions. In addition to his interceptions, he recorded 47 total tackles, two forced fumbles, and a defensive touchdown. His standout season culminated in winning the prestigious Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded to the nation's top defensive player, in 2023. As of December 2024, Watts received Unanimous All-American honors in 2023 and Consensus All-American honors in 2024.
