The Sanderson Farms Championship is a PGA Tour professional golf tournament held annually in Mississippi. In the autumn of 2014, it moved to Jackson's Country Club before the 2015 campaign. There has never been another golf competition at Sanderson Farms. It has contributed to the fundraising of more than $8.1 million for state-wide charities since its debut tournament in 1968. Prior to moving in 1994 to the Annandale Golf Club in Madison, where it remained until 2013, the competition was once held at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg.
Sanderson Farms, a poultry production & manufacturing firm based in Laurel, Mississippi, has been the tournament's title sponsor since 2013. Golf promotion for charitable purposes is the goal of the tournament's host organization, Century Club Charities, a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
Sanderson Farms Championship History
Originally known as the Magnolia Classic from 1968 to 1985, with notable champions, including Roger Maltbie, Craig Stadler, and Payne Stewart, this golf tournament underwent several name changes over the years. In 1986, it became the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic, followed by the Southern Farm Bureau Classic from 1999 to 2006, the Viking Classic from 2007 to 2011, and the True South Classic in 2012.
Historically, this tournament was often scheduled to run concurrently with major tournaments or limited-field events on the PGA Tour, referred to as an "alternate event." It later became part of the Fall Series, a series of tournaments held after The Tour Championship. However, in 2011, it reverted to its previous status as an alternate event. Typically, top-tier professional golfers seldom participated in this tournament. It was initially scheduled opposite the Masters Tournament until 1994, and then it clashed with The Open Championship in the mid-1990s.
From 2007 to 2010, it typically coincided with the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, which featured PGA Tour players. In 2011, it returned to the regular PGA Tour season, scheduled opposite the British Open in July. Since 1994, it has been an official money event on the PGA Tour. Before that, it operated as a satellite event where money counted, but the wins were considered unofficial. Except from 1983 to 1985, it was part of the developmental Tournament Players Series.
