Texas native Ryan Hunter Palmer graduated from high school in 1995. Before enrolling at Texas A&M University, he spent a year studying at the University of North Texas. He received his bachelor's degree from Texas A&M in 2000.

Palmer started his career in 2000. He took part in the mini-tours (Tightlies Tour and Hooters Tour) from 2000 to 2002. He participated on the Nationwide Tour in 2003 to qualify for the 2004 PGA Tour, winning the Clearwater Classic and finishing sixth on the money list.

Palmer overcame Briny Baird and Vijay Singh by three shots to win his maiden PGA Tour title in the 2004 FUNAI Classic at Walt Disney World Resort. At the 2008 Ginn sur Mer Classic, held on the PGA Tour Fall Series four years later, he captured his second career victory. The week-long course conditions were challenging due to the wet, rainy weather.
