The inaugural Japanese professional golfer to win at the Masters Tournament, Hideki Matsama, was born on February 25, 1992. He defeated Will Zalatoris by a single shot, with a score of 278, under 10 in 2021.

Matsuyama went to Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai, Miyagi Province, in Japan. He won five amateur championships, including the Asian Amateur Championship in 2010, which gave him a chance to compete at the 2011 Masters Tournament.

He was the first Japanese amateur to play at the Masters; furthermore, he won a silver cup as the lowest scoring amateur. In 2012, he became the number one player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He turned professional in 2013 and in his rookie season, he won the Tsuruya Open, defeating David Oh by a single stroke with a score of 266, under 18.

As of March 2024, Matsuyama had 18 professional victories, eight career top-10 finishes in major tournaments, and five Presidents Cup participations. Matsuyama has won eight times on the Japan Golf Tour, twice in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and twice in World Golf Championships events. He is now the most successful Japanese player in PGA Tour history, with nine victories.

Matsuyama most recently won the Genesis Invitational in February 2024. Six strokes behind the leader going into the final round, he rallied to win his first PGA Tour tournament since the 2022 Sony Open in Hawaii with a 62-stroke victory. Matsuyama recorded the second-lowest score in the history of the course.
