More than 50 years old, the TOTO Japan Classic was established in 1973 as a women's professional event, initially on the LPGA of Japan Tour. In 1976, the event was co-sanctioned by the LPGA Tour; however, it did not sanction the 2020 and 2021 events due to COVID-19. Regardless, the events still took place under JLPGA’s sole sponsorship.
The event doesn't have a cut and is played with a field of 78 players, including 36 golfers from the LPGA of Japan Tour and 42 golfers from the LPGA Tour. With a purse of $2 million, the event is played in a 72-hole stroke play format. Over the years, the tournament has had a number of names and sponsors. The Japanese producer of bathroom products, Toto Ltd., has been its title sponsor since 2015.
