Charles Patrick McAvoy Jr. is an American ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Boston Bruins in the NHL. The Bruins chose him as the 14th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Growing up in Long Beach, New York, McAvoy began his journey on the ice at the age of 3. His introduction to skating took place at Long Beach Arena, where his father, Charlie Sr., played a significant role in installing a studio rink while working as a plumbing and heating contractor. McAvoy grew up a fan of the New York Rangers and Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Brian Leetch. He attended Long Beach High School for one year before moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to join USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, playing two seasons with the NTDP.

McAvoy contributed to the United States winning the gold medal at the 2015 IIHF Under-18 World Championship. He then returned to the East Coast to play at Boston University as a 17-year-old freshman.

He further emphasizes, "This is home for me now. I live here in the summer. I love it here. I want to be here forever." Unfortunately, there isn’t much information available about his house.

Charlie McAvoy has a strong connection with Boston and feels passionate about being a part of the community. He not only loves the city but also considers it his home, especially during the summer. His desire to stay in Boston reflects a deep appreciation for the people, the atmosphere, and the overall experience, making it clear that he has found a place where he truly belongs.

Charlie McAvoy's NHL Journey

Following his freshman season at Boston University, during which he led the team's defensemen with 25 points (three goals, 22 assists) in 37 games, McAvoy was selected by the Boston Bruins with the No. 14 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. As a sophomore, McAvoy earned recognition as a CCM/ACHA First Team All-American, tallying 26 points (five goals, 21 assists) in 38 games. Additionally, McAvoy earned a gold medal for the United States at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship.

After signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Bruins on April 10, 2017, he made his NHL debut in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Ottawa Senators, filling in due to injuries to Boston's defensemen. Throughout the six-game series, he garnered three assists while averaging 26:12 of ice time per game, ranking second among Bruins defensemen to Zdeno Chara (28:46). In the following season, McAvoy's outstanding performance earned him a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team, accumulating 32 points (seven goals, 25 assists) and a plus-20 rating in 63 games.

Injuries limited McAvoy to 54 regular-season games in 2018-19, but he played a crucial role for the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, contributing eight points (two goals, six assists) in 23 games as Boston advanced to the Cup Final, ultimately losing to the St. Louis Blues in seven games. On September 15, 2019, McAvoy inked a three-year, $14.7 million deal with the Bruins. Later, on October 15, 2021, he secured an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with the team. In the 2022–23 season, McAvoy was part of the Bruins squad that established NHL single-season records with 65 wins and 135 points. However, on October 30, 2023, he faced disciplinary action after delivering an illegal check to the head of Florida Panthers defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, resulting in a four-game suspension.
