Ryan Reaves began playing hockey at age five. He played for the Winnipeg South Monarchs minor ice hockey team and in 2000, he played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He also played football, but he had to stop after rupturing his posterior cruciate ligament during a hockey competition.
In 2002, Ryan Reaves was drafted 36th overall by the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He played for the Wheat Kings for four seasons, during which he was noticed and encouraged for his physical playing style. In 2004, Ryan led the St. John's-Ravenscourt School hockey team to the McDonald's Provincial High School Hockey Championship.
In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Ryan was selected by the St. Louis Blues with the 156th pick overall. He made his NHL debut with the Blues in 2010 and signed his first professional contract for three years worth $1.75 million. During his NHL career, Ryan has played for the St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights, Minnesota Wild, and New York Rangers. He is currently (2023) playing as a right winger for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Throughout his NHL career, Ryan Reaves has received multiple awards. In 2010, he was selected for the NHL All-Rookie Team. In 2014, he was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team. As a Canadian national hockey team player, Ryan has participated in multiple international competitions.
