Commentary

That brings us to the end of our coverage for this match. We hope we made it worth your while. This is the duo of Darpan Tikiya and Rajarshi Das signing off. Totsiens!

With this win, the Sunrisers climb up the points table and are now placed second. The difference between them and table toppers is of merely one point. Though, Paarl Royals have played one game less. The Super Kings stay at number four but their net run rate worsens after this loss, which is not ideal given that the two teams below them are not far behind on points. Both squads will now catch a plane to Johannesburg where they will clash in a reverse fixture in less than 48 hours' time.

Aiden Markam (Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain): "The bowlers are pretty clear in their plans. The execution has been good. So, credit goes to the bowlers for assessing the conditions and executing the plans so well. It is a place where boundaries can be hard to score. Hence, we try to put emphasis on running between the wickets. Really happy to see the boys hustling. We are a competitive bunch. When you have a target on your back, you want to come out and play your best cricket. Lot of love to the fans. They have been with us through thick and thin."

Faf du Plessis (Joburg Super Kings captain): They are a strong batting line up. I thought that 165 was there or thereabouts for a par score. The new ball did a bit. We probably needed one more partnership. There was a time when Conway and du Plooy were dominating the game. Then, we thought it was time to accelerate. Losing a wicket at the wrong time did not help. The Sunrisers are playing some good cricket. Looking forward to their challenge at home in two days time.

Marco Jansen has been adjudged Player Of The Match! Here's what he has to say: There's no better crowd in the country, you definitely feel their presence while on the field. I didn't pull much of a trigger with the bat, just got the ones. Stubbo batted brilliantly, we decided to go for it with 3-4 overs remaining. Stubbo was fantastic. Gleese (Gleeson) has good pace, he swings the ball, which works nicely on this ground. We bowled nice lines and lengths and reaped the rewards. All plans depend on the wicket, today's wicket we felt that bowling hard length for as long as possible was working nicely. Some would skid on, some would stop, hard length was going to be difficult for the batters to play. Ideally we would like it like that but we'd take each game as they'd come.

The floodlights have been turned off. The fans in the stand bring out the flashlights of their phones and the singing continues as it has through the evening. The party is just getting started! In all fairness, the crowd has a big reason to celebrate. The start of the season for their team was rough. They suffered three hefty defeats. But now, having won four on a trot, all in comprehensive fashion, they must feel like they are on cloud nine.

Markram's decision to bat first and put runs on the board was validated by the vigorous collective effort from the Sunrisers batters. They did get some benefit of the errors committed by the Super Kings. For instance, Crawley was bowled on the first delivery of the match, but it turned out to be a no-ball. The wicket was two-paced and by no means a batter's friend. But Bedingham's grind, Markram's craft and Stubbs' street-smarts towards the end helped the hosts put a good score.

Then, the bowling unit exhibited why it is rated so highly. Jansen and Gleeson bowled probing spells with the new ball, the off-spinners — Harmer and Markram — bowled tight overs in the middle and Baartman came back towards the fag end to pick up a couple of wickets as well. The Super Kings seemed to be in with a shout until about half an hour ago. Skipper du Plessis played a few authoritative shots in the powerplay to set the tone. Conway played a gritty innings, du Plooy seemed to be in the mood too. But somehow, the SEC bowlers kept coming back. Following Conway's dismissal, JSK went from 105/2 to 141/8 in a little more than four overs. Post that, it was mere formalities.
