He was born on November 14, 1988, in Safford, Arizona. Gaethje's journey in combat sports began at a young age, as he started wrestling when he was just four years old. He excelled in wrestling throughout his school years, becoming a two-time Arizona state champion at Safford High School. Later, during his time at the University of Northern Colorado, he achieved the status of NCAA Division I All-American.

While still in college, Gaethje ventured into amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) and eventually turned professional in 2011. In 2013, he joined the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) promotion, where he quickly made a name for himself and eventually became the WSOF Lightweight Champion. Gaethje's impressive run in WSOF saw him successfully defend his lightweight title five times.

In 2017, Gaethje made a significant career move by transitioning to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He continued to showcase his skills and tenacity inside the octagon, earning a reputation as an exciting and aggressive fighter.
