“Iron” Michael Chandler is a former Bellator lightweight champion who currently competes in the lightweight division of the UFC. Born on April 24, 1986, in High Ridge, Missouri, he started his professional MMA career in 2009 after being an All-American D1 wrestler at the University of Missouri. Michael Chandler’s Career Before UFC
Skipping an amateur career, Michael Chandler debuted in professional MMA in 2009 against Kyle Swadley achieving a TKO victory in the bout to start his career. He joined Strikeforce in November 2009, winning his first two bouts before moving to Bellator in 2010. Competing in both the welterweight and lightweight divisions, he quickly rose through the ranks, winning the Bellator Season Four Lightweight Tournament in 2011.
Chandler claimed the Bellator Lightweight World Championship by submitting Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 58. Following several title defenses and intense bouts, including a rematch loss to Alvarez and two battles with Will Brooks, Chandler reclaimed the lightweight title twice, securing his second reign in 2016 and third in 2018. His tenure at Bellator ended in August 2020 after numerous high-profile fights, including a knockout win over Benson Henderson. He then transitioned to the UFC, debuting in 2020.
