Robert Whittaker entered the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after appearing in the first season of the Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes in 2012. He found a place in the eight-member team of Australian fighters which were to compete with an eight-member team from the United Kingdom. He won the welterweight tournament by beating Brad Scott in 2012. Whittaker witnessed a meteoric rise in the promotion and kept raked a series of consecutive victories after suffering a couple of hiccups in his two fights after defeating Brad Scott. He moved to the middleweight division during this duration and also won the division’s interim championship by beating Yoel Romero at UFC 213.

Robert Whittaker was crowned the undisputed middleweight champion of the UFC after Georges St. Pierre vacated the title. However, his title was cut short by Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 who defeated him and wrested the middleweight title from Robert Whittaker. Since his title loss, Whittaker fought Adesanya in a title rematch in an unsuccessful attempt to win the championship. Whittaker despite his losses, has not given up hope on his championship campaign and has regularly campaigned for the cause. He locked horns with Dricus du Plessis at UFC 290 for the No. 1 contender spot and ended up getting knocked out in the second round at UFC 290. He is now scheduled to face Khamzat Chimaev in his next outing at UFC 308 on October 26, 2024.
