The Chicago Bears website claims that Frank and Kandace Kmet lived in Lake Barrington with their four children before relocating to Arlington Heights. Further, they report that Cole's grandfather, Dave Kmet, passed away in November 2020 from COVID-19 and pulmonary fibrosis. He was married to Marcia for 56 years, and had four children, including Bears lineman Frank Kmet in the 1990s, 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Cole Kmet's Father

Kmet's father, Frank Kmet, attended John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and excelled in both wrestling and football. It was during his second year of high school that he received a diabetes diagnosis. In his senior year, the Chicago Tribune selected him all-state. Kmet joined Purdue University's second-ranked recruiting class in the country and committed to the school. He played football at Purdue University from 1988 to 1991.

Frank's college career ended when he broke his leg during the 28-7 victory over Wisconsin in October 1991. In the fourth round of the 1992 NFL draft, he was selected by the Buffalo Bills. He also played with the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and Green Bay Packers, but he never made an appearance in an NFL game due to the leg injury sustained in 1991, which never fully recovered.
