In December 2018, Johnson made an auspicious announcement, declaring his commitment to join the Michigan Wolverines football team. Despite being a freshman in 2019, Johnson showcased his skills by securing four receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown against Michigan State, laying a solid foundation for his college career.

As a sophomore, Johnson's presence on the field expanded, participating in all six games, three of which he started during Michigan's abbreviated season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Displaying his growing prowess, he accumulated 16 receptions for 254 yards, including standout performances with 82 yards against Indiana and an impressive 105 yards against Rutgers.

Both his mother and father along with his younger brother Carnegie Johnson joined him on the stage. They celebrated his decision. Johnson's mother also graduated from Michigan.
