The Dallas Cowboys have experienced a mix of highs and lows over the last five seasons, with playoff appearances in 2021 and 2023. However, the previous season was a disappointment as they finished with a 7–10 record. The injury to star quarterback Dak Prescott hampered their progress, and the Cowboys have a lot to improve upon to return to playoff contention.
One of their strengths remains their passing game, with Prescott behind the ball and star wideout CeeDee Lamb receiving those throws. Micah Parsons continues to be a standout performer and anchors the linebacker corps. However, the Cowboys have a few concerns going into the 2025 season that they’d like to address.
What are the Dallas Cowboys’ major concerns ahead of the NFL Draft 2025?
Wide Receiver
The Cowboys have a star WR1 in Lamb, but their next-best wideout is far behind. Lamb led the franchise in almost all key metrics except touchdowns. Jake Ferguson recorded 59 receptions from 86 attempts with an average of 4.2 yards per reception as WR2.
Jalen Tolbert showed flashes of brilliance and scored seven touchdowns from just 49 receptions but averaged only 2.9 yards per reception. Hence, the Cowboys need an equally threatening WR2 or WR3 to complement Lamb.
Defensive Line
Another concern for the Cowboys is their defensive line, particularly the interior, as they lack a dominant presence despite Osa Odighizuwa. With 468 points allowed (31st), 6,039 yards given up (28th), and an average of 5.8 yards per play (29th), the Cowboys' defense ranked near the bottom. They signed a DT in free agency but couldn’t land a high-end interior pass rusher.
Running Backs
The Cowboys did not rely heavily on the rushing attack, and when they did, it was underwhelming. From 429 attempts (24th), they rushed for 1,705 yards (27th), averaging 4.0 yards per attempt (30th). Now, with Tony Pollard gone, they have no clear RB1 on the roster.
What can the Dallas Cowboys do in the 2025 NFL draft?
Despite leaving $20.7 million in dead money, the Cowboys have $37.6 million in cap space with $32.7 million in effective cap space and 10 draft picks, including the 12th overall pick.
Round 1 – Pick 12
As per Patrik Walker for the Dallas Cowboys, Arizona’s wideout Tetairoa McMillan appears to be the top choice for their first-round pick. He is an All-American (2024), measuring 6’4", and ranks among the top 94th percentile among wide receivers. Matthew Golden of the Texas Longhorns is another option for Dallas.
Round 2 – Pick 44
Running back Omarion Hampton of the North Carolina Tar Heels appears to be the top choice for the second round. He is a two-time All-American and a two-time First-Team All-ACC selection.
