After high school, he studied at West Virginia University, where he committed to playing college football for the West Virginia Mountaineers football team from 2009 to 2012. Some of his noteworthy achievements include securing the All-Big East Conference Second-team (2010), the All-Big East Conference First-team (2011), and the 2012 Orange Bowl MVP.
