The Carolina Panthers drafted Butker in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft. However, he was waived from the squad after a few months and was signed to the practice squad. However, Butker was signed by the Chiefs the same month and finished his season with 142 points after having a nervy start with the Chiefs. In the recently concluded NFL regular season, Butker played 17 games converting 94.5% of field goals.

Butker holds the franchise records for most field goals made in a season (38), points by a rookie (142), longest field goal (62 yards), and a few more. Growing up in Atlanta, Butker went to The Westminster Schools. He attended the home state college Georgia Tech playing under head coach Paul Johnson.
