Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the most consistent pass catchers in the Detroit Lions offense but it’s his running game that takes the majority of the spotlight. Gibbs plays as a running back for the Lions and he recorded 52 receptions, 945 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, 316 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown in his very first NFL season.

Usually in the NFL draft, running backs are not drafted very early. Regardless, the Detroit Lions chose Gibbs as the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft. This move by the Lions drew some criticism. NFL analysts and pundits like Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com said “There is not great value there. I give it a D.” However, the Lions had the last laugh since Gibbs had a great start to his NFL career. Gibbs and LaPorta, who was also drafted in the 2023 NFL draft, are the only pair of rookie teammates to score at least 10 touchdowns each in NFL history. The amazing part is this is only their rookie season.

Gibbs attended Dalton High School and started his season as a running back. He rushed for 897 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore and 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior. However, in his senior season, Gibbs exploded on the field recording 2,554 yards and had 40 touchdowns. Sports Illustrated labeled him First Team All-American. Due to his monstrous season, Gibbs was now a four-star recruit and got offers from colleges such as Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Michigan, North Carolina, and Texas A&M.

Gibbs remained loyal to his hometown and chose to attend Georgia Tech for two years before taking his talents to Alabama. He finished his collegiate career with 2132 rushing yards, 15 rushing TDs, 103 receptions, 1212 receiving yards, and 8 receiving TDs.

Gibbs’ biological mother is Nika Willis. However, his biological father’s name is not known. Gibbs was raised by his grandmother, Angie, and he had a difficult childhood as his biological parents were in and out of the picture. Due to various family situations, Angie, his grandmother, raised him. He calls his grandmother Angie his “mom,” and has credited her as being his biggest support system and his inspiration.

Gibbs was introduced to the Ross family in a shelter and began living with the family in 2017. Dusty and Greg Ross later adopted Gibbs and made him an official part of their family. Gibbs’ grandmother, Angie, has continued to play a massive role in his upbringing even after the adoption process.

Coming out of Dalton, Georgia, Gibbs was born on March 20th, 2002. He has been a great addition to the Lions’ offense and has silenced the critics who were against the Lions picking Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft. Gibbs became the first rookie since Larry Sanders to record a game with 100 plus rushing and over 30 receiving yards in a single game.
