Hargrave’s father goes by the name, Tim Bates. Bates was North Rowan High School’s assistant coach and it is the same high school that Hargrave attended. North Rowan is located in Spencer, North Carolina, United States. Hargrave was previously a basketball player before he completely switched to football.

According to MercuryNews.com, Andrew Mitchell, Hargrave’s high school basketball coach said “He was hard-nosed, a bruiser, but had a nice, soft touch and great feet.” Hargrave also shed some light on his high school basketball days and said “Basketball was my way. But I had like five or six sacks in my first game and it just came kind of natural to me. I had a few bad games in basketball. Sometimes against taller people. In football, in high school, I didn’t have many bad games.”
