Jerod Mayo is an American football head coach for the New England Patriots of the NFL. As of October 2024, the 38-year-old is the second youngest head coach in the league (via Pro Football Network). Jerod Mayo became the first black head coach in New England Patriots history. Mayo, a former linebacker, has only been with one team, whether as a pro player or coach, i.e., New England Patriots (as of October 2024). The former 10th overall pick from the 2008 NFL draft played eight seasons in the league. Jerod Mayo has experience playing football as a linebacker and running back during his high school tenure at Kecoughtan. The former four-star recruit coming out of high school committed to the University of Tennessee over North Carolina State, Purdue, Virginia, and Virginia Tech and played collegiate football for four years before turning pro in 2008.

Jerod Mayo's Early Life, Personal Life, and Family Background

Jerod Mayo was born in Hampton, Virginia on February 23, 1986. He got his secondary education from Kecoughtan High School. As a junior, he amassed 68 tackles, of which 22 were for loss, along with four interceptions and three sacks. His senior year saw him record 110 tackles, which included 18 tackles for loss and two interceptions. He also racked up 1,245 yards on the ground in seven games during his senior season. He was a first-team All-District, All-Area, and All-Region honorary in his junior year. Jerod’s younger brother, Deron Mayo is a strength and conditioning coach on his brother’s coaching staff at New England. After retiring from the NFL, Mayo worked in the Financial department for Optum, a health company. He also had a career as a TV analyst, most notably as a co-host on Quick Slants with Tom E. Curran on NBC Sports Boston from 2016 to 2019 as per CBS News.

Jerod Mayo was appointed as an inside linebackers coach by the Patriots on March 27, 2019. During his five-year tenure in New England, the Pats' defense finished inside the top 10 four times. In his first season, linebacker Dont’a Hightower earned a second career Pro Bowl nod and the Pats' defense finished No.1 that year.
