Mickens lettered for the Clemson Tigers football program from 2020 to 2024. Over five seasons, he appeared in 60 games and started 30 of them. He recorded 229 tackles (13.5 for loss), seven interceptions, 15 pass breakups in 2,174 career snaps. He became just the 10th player in Clemson history to play in 60 games. R.J. Mickens' father, Ray Mickens, was born on January 4, 1973. He’s a former professional football cornerback who entered the NFL after earning All-American honors at Texas A&M University. Ray Mickens played for ten years in the NFL with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots. His brother, Fred Williams, played for the Houston Oilers. After retiring, Ray co-founded M2 Concepts with Leonard Mickens in January 2010. M2 Concepts is a privately owned, minority-owned retail, beverage, and food business in the Dallas–Fort Worth market. In an interview with the Texas Tigers website, R.J. Mickens shared: “Having my dad as a mentor was everything. I was around seven when he retired, so I still have memories from some of his last games with the Patriots. He’s always brought football in my life, and I am thankful for that.
